The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is the US government agency responsible for the research, travel, and exploration of space. Established by President Eisenhower in 1958, NASA has put humans on the moon, built satellites that keep the internet online, and researched the very foundation of our universe. The agency has given humanity images of the universe that no person could see from Earth, capturing images of distant galaxies, all-consuming black holes, and the surface of Mars.

Exploratory Endeavors: Apollo Program (1960-1972): Possibly NASA's most famous program, the Apollo Program was responsible for putting man on the moon on July 20, 1969. When Neil Armstrong stepped out of Apollo 11 onto the surface of the moon, he said "One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind" which has become an easily recognizable quote. This mission was a huge accomplishment for humanity by proving that humans aren't limited to the planet they were born on. To this day, only 12 people in the universe can say that they've set foot on the moon. Space Shuttle (1972-2011): The Space Shuttle program's mission was to create a reusable spacecraft. Previously, ships were unable to operate after their first mission due to crashing in the ocean or burning up in Earth's atmosphere. Four shuttles came out of the project: Columbia, Challenger, Discovery, and Atlantis. Unfortunately, both Challenger and Columbia had accidents that killed a total of 14 astronauts. Mars Rover (2003-Present): The mission of the Mars Rover is to explore the surface of Mars. In its research, it has discovered that both water and organic matter could have once been on the Red Planet. The first Rover, named Opportunity, landed on Mars in 2004 and remained there until a planet-wide dust storm knocked out communications in 2018. Its successor, Curiosity, has picked up where Opportunity left off, surveying the ground for signs of life. Curiosity is the first influencer on Mars with 4.3 million followers on Twitter, often tweeting selfies from its travels or talking about zapping rocks with its laser.
Human Structures in Space: International Space Station (1998-Present): The International Space Station is a collaborative effort from the US, Russia, Japan, Europe, and Canada. It's the largest artificial object in the solar system with the capacity to hold 7 crew members. The purpose of the ISS is to study how low gravity environments differ from the Earth's surface. We've learned that humans can have issues like muscle atrophy when exposed to low gravity for extended periods of time, which is helpful information for planning long trips to the moon or Mars. Crew members of the ISS study dark matter, astrobiology, meteorology, and many other fields of study. Hubble Space Telescope (1990-Present): The Hubble Space Telescope provided some of the highest-resolution images of our universe. Through it, we've learned that the universe is expanding at an increasing rate. The Hubble Space Telescope has also helped us more closely estimate the age of the universe to be 13.7 billion years. HST has also helped increase our understanding of black holes, the Milky Way galaxy, and gamma ray bursts. James Webb Space Telescope (2021-Present): Like the Hubble Space Telescope, the James Webb Space Telescope allows us to see far-away stars, planets, and other celestial bodies. The difference is that the James Webb Space Telescope uses infrared technology. Infrared radiation passes through cosmic dust easier than light, allowing the telescope see older stars that are farther lightyears away.
